JJ McCarthy Reportedly Positioned to Challenge for Giants Starting Quarterback Role
Rookie quarterback acquired mid-week is already making an impression and could see action sooner rather than later.
J.J. McCarthy has rapidly moved into contention to become the New York Giants' starting quarterback, potentially challenging Jameis Winston for the position just a week after being acquired by the team. The Giants brought McCarthy in following a season-ending injury to their starter, Jaxson Dart.
McCarthy became available after two seasons with the Minnesota Vikings, who drafted him in the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft. The Vikings reportedly found him to be surplus to requirements following their draft selection of him. Winston has started two games since Dart's injury, leading the team to a narrow victory over the Tennessee Titans last week.
According to ESPN reporter Jeremy Fowler, McCarthy is already making a strong impression on head coach John Harbaugh. "People I've talked to say that it's possible that McCarthy could play sooner than later if he learns the playbook and continues to acclimate," Fowler reported.
Prior to the 2024 NFL Draft, the Giants had evaluated McCarthy but ultimately selected Malik Nabers with the sixth overall pick. McCarthy, 23, was drafted 10th overall by Minnesota after leading Michigan to a national championship under Jim Harbaugh, John Harbaugh's brother.
However, McCarthy found himself third on the Vikings' depth chart this season behind starter Kyler Murray and backup Carson Wentz. His NFL career began with challenges, including missing his entire rookie season due to a torn meniscus.
Upon his return in 2025, McCarthy earned the starting role for Minnesota, finishing the season with a 6-4 record across 10 starts. He threw for 1,632 yards and 11 touchdowns, with 12 interceptions, and added four rushing touchdowns. Persistent injuries, including a fractured hand late in his sophomore campaign, disrupted his progress.
Minnesota's quarterback room underwent a significant overhaul this offseason, leading to McCarthy's trade to New York. McCarthy expressed surprise at the trade, calling it "a shock" but also "an opportunity to take advantage of." He added that he valued the Giants' tradition and felt a connection to the franchise since his initial visit.
