JJ Gabriel Seeks Manchester United Exit Amidst Club's Decline
A 15-year-old Manchester United academy player has requested to cancel his contract, citing the club's diminished status compared to European rivals.
Manchester United faces a potential departure of highly-touted 15-year-old prospect JJ Gabriel, whose family has requested the immediate cancellation of his contract. The club, however, has stated they have no intention of acceding to this request. Gabriel has not trained since last week's demand, reportedly stemming from disappointment over not being included in the squad for Manchester United's Champions League match against FK Sabah.
The family's motivation for seeking an exit is rooted in the perceived decline of Manchester United since the era of Sir Alex Ferguson, a period during which the club has not secured a Premier League title since 2013. Sources indicate that Gabriel's family believes the club is "far away" from the elite European standards set by teams like Barcelona, Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, and domestic rivals Arsenal and Manchester City.
A source close to the family stated, "His dad has ambitions for his son to be the best in the world and play with the best and learn from the best and right now that's not current situation at United - far from it." This sentiment highlights a desire for Gabriel to develop under top-tier guidance.
Gabriel and his family have reportedly held discussions with Barcelona and Real Madrid, the latter of which has allegedly been pursuing the young player for months. The family is also reportedly considering super-agent Ali Barat to represent the teenager, who will be eligible for official representation upon turning 16 on October 6.
Gabriel joined Manchester United at the age of 11 and is regarded as one of Europe's most promising young talents. He was slated to sign a first-year scholarship, which would have led to a professional contract on his 17th birthday. He was also reportedly considered for a first-team debut against Brighton in the Carabao Cup.
Gabriel's current contract is set to expire at the end of the season, and he has the option to petition the Premier League or FIFA to be released as a free agent if Manchester United does not agree to terminate his deal. He has not been with the club since scoring a hat-trick for the Under-21s in the UEFA Youth League.
Manchester United manager Michael Carrick acknowledged the situation, emphasizing the importance of the player's well-being. "He's a young boy, JJ, and I think it's important that we certainly don't play anything out here," Carrick stated.
