JJ Gabriel Appears in Manchester United Team Photo Amidst Ongoing Departure Efforts
Teenage forward features in official club images released Monday, taken before his confirmed intention to leave Old Trafford.
JJ Gabriel, the teenage forward for Manchester United, has been included in the club's official team photograph for the current season. However, this inclusion does not signal any reconciliation, as new details emerge regarding his efforts to depart Old Trafford. The photographs were reportedly taken on September 8, two days before Gabriel informed the club of his intention to leave.
Gabriel, who will turn 16 on Tuesday, is now being targeted by several prominent European clubs, including Real Madrid and Barcelona. He is understood to possess a European Union passport, which could facilitate a move to the continent. While no clubs have yet approached Manchester United, the club has indicated they would consider legal action if any evidence of an illegal inducement by a club or agent emerges, which would contravene regulations concerning young players.
Sources close to the club state that Manchester United still holds Gabriel's registration and has made multiple attempts to reconcile the situation as part of their duty of care. These efforts have so far been unsuccessful.
Trigger for Departure
Tensions between Gabriel's camp and Manchester United had been escalating for months. According to sources, the player's decision to seek a move was ultimately triggered by his non-inclusion in the squad for the Champions League encounter against Azerbaijani champions Sabah FK on September 10. Gabriel's camp had expressed a desire for him to be used as a substitute in this match, which was considered the easiest in the league phase.
Discussions also reportedly took place regarding the prospect of Gabriel coming on as a substitute against Brighton in the EFL Cup on September 16. Manchester United officials subsequently maintained that this was the plan. Had he played in either of these matches, Gabriel would have become Manchester United's youngest ever player.
However, by the time of the match against Brighton, the striker had already informed the club of his intention to leave and had departed the country. Gabriel was ineligible to play against Sabah because he had not been registered on United's UEFA A list of players by the September 3 deadline. The precise reasons for this omission have not been clarified.
Gabriel did, however, score a hat-trick in a UEFA Youth League game against Sabah FK on September 10. It remains unclear if any significant events occurred after this game, as he has not returned to Manchester United since.
Club's Perspective on Development
Manchester United believes they have made it clear that Gabriel is viewed as immensely important to their first-team future. Despite this, sources indicate that the player did not report for the start of the academy's pre-season training in early July, even though he was asked to do so a week before the senior squad.
Sources also claim that the club lobbied the Premier League to allow the forward to use "JJ Gabriel" on the back of his shirt, which they felt underscored their commitment to the academy prospect. Gabriel's legal name is Joseph Junior Andreou O'Cearuill, and he is reportedly using "JJ Gabriel" for commercial purposes.
Manchester United asserts that they have provided Gabriel with first-team care and services, including regular meetings with senior coaches and nutritionists. His inclusion in the senior team photo is viewed by the club as further evidence of their commitment to his development and transition into first-team football.
Past Expectations and Opportunities
When Gabriel committed to Manchester United in the summer of 2025, the prospect of breaking into the first team was a significant draw. At just 14 years old, he was already looking towards senior involvement. Within months, he was called into senior training sessions. Expectations grew to the point where interim boss Darren Fletcher was questioned about the possibility of the forward making his competitive debut in the FA Cup third-round tie against Brighton in January. Fletcher, who was Gabriel's U18 coach at the time, deemed the youngster not physically ready for such a step.
As Gabriel continued to excel at the U18 level, it seemed a matter of time before he would be given a first-team chance. He finished the 2025-26 campaign as the Premier League's Under-18 Player of the Year and received the same accolade at Manchester United. It appeared certain he would be involved at the start of pre-season, particularly with many senior players absent after World Cup commitments.
However, subsequent events solidified existing doubts among those close to Gabriel that Manchester United might not be the ideal club for his development. He was not part of the squad for the friendly against Wrexham in Helsinki on July 24. He was an unused substitute against Rosenborg in Trondheim on July 24, a match where Carrick made 10 outfield changes, five of whom have since been sold or loaned out.
Gabriel finally made his senior debut, playing the final eight minutes against Atletico Madrid in Stockholm on August 1, replacing Bryan Mbeumo. This was his only senior appearance, as he remained on the bench for the final two pre-season games against Leeds and AC Milan without being brought on. During the match against Leeds, former FA Youth Cup teammate Dan Armer and 18-year-old newcomer Tynan Thompson were introduced.
