Jimmi Simpson Teases Unforeseeable Twist in 'Dark Matter' Season 2 Finale

Star of the Apple TV+ series Dark Matter, Jimmi Simpson, has teased a significant and unexpected twist in the upcoming Season 2 finale. The actor described the event as something "you couldn't even possibly prepare for," suggesting a level of unpredictability for viewers.

The penultimate episode of Season 2 saw several key character reunions and confrontations, including Jason 1 and Jason 2 meeting, Charlie traveling to find his deceased brother Max, and Daniela searching for her son. Agent MacNamara experienced the series' multiverse-traveling technology firsthand, while OG Jason and Ryan (Simpson) reunited. The group, alongside Blair and Amanda, worked on a plan to dismantle the original box, as Leighton began to question the technology's destructive potential across alternate realities.

The Season 2 finale, titled "No Quiet Life," is scheduled to premiere on Apple TV+ on Friday, October 30, at 9:00 p.m. ET (or October 29 at 9:00 p.m. ET). The official synopsis states, "A high-stakes gambit leads to unintended consequences."

Simpson, who plays Ryan, elaborated on the finale's direction, noting a return to an "analog world" which he personally favors. "And then, just like life, you make these great, fantastic plans, and they’re all coming together. But then there’s this one unexpected reality that you couldn’t even possibly prepare for. That’s what we’re dealing with,” he told Decider.

Reflecting on his character's journey, Simpson acknowledged Ryan's evolving perspective. After witnessing alternate versions of himself and the death of his sister in another universe, Ryan is portrayed as someone who recognizes his past actions and seeks to rectify them. "He’s absolutely a guy who’s going to see what he’s done and realize the error in his ways, or the things that he’s done that need his effort to try to get back on track," Simpson said. He added that while Ryan may not have been the sole creator of the box, he played an essential role in its development.

The characters' attempt to destroy the original box in the finale follows a pattern seen earlier in the season. In Episode 4, when Amanda and Ryan returned to their version of Chicago, they found a world ravaged by plague. This outcome highlights how even well-intentioned efforts can lead to unforeseen and unsatisfying results, especially after characters have undergone significant personal changes during their journeys through different universes.

"That was a situation where the idea that you have that’s going to finally make you happy and satisfied, and you struggle and journey so hard to get it there, but by the time you’ve gone from point A to point B — especially if they are universes away — you’ve changed," Simpson recalled. "And so now you understand actually a more deeper resonant reason to be alive. And instead of just going home and being comfy, there are still problems to fix. So [Ryan] was truly unsatisfied when he got back to what he thought his dream spot would be."

Simpson's tease of an "unexpected reality" suggests that regardless of the success in destroying the original box, new problems or consequences may leave the characters feeling unfulfilled once again, similar to the experience in Episode 4. Fans are left to anticipate how the season will conclude and what challenges lie ahead for the characters.
