Jim Carrey's 'Liar Liar' Co-Star Received Fan Mail From Prisoners as a Child

Justin Cooper, best known for his role as Max Reede in the 1997 comedy "Liar, Liar," revealed that he received fan mail from incarcerated individuals during his time as a child star. Cooper, now 37, discussed this aspect of his early fame on "The Not So Little Rascals" podcast.

He explained that his mother took measures to protect him from the more unsettling fan correspondence, including letters from prisoners. "She would tell me later on about prison mail that I would get that she never showed me, letters from people in jail," Cooper recounted.

Cooper stated that his mother actively shielded him from such content, and never left him alone with anyone on set. Despite these unnerving letters, Cooper recalled enjoying his childhood fame, describing the experience as "cool." He noted that while it might have occasionally inconvenienced his family, such as during public outings, he did not mind the attention.

Working alongside Jim Carrey, who played his father in "Liar, Liar," was a positive experience for Cooper. He described Carrey as "goofy all the time" and fun to watch. Cooper also shared an anecdote about Carrey making a surprise cameo as Fire Marshall Bill during a scene where his character is on a stretcher. Cooper mentioned that Carrey wanted to meet him beforehand, as he had not previously meshed well with another child actor.

Cooper's acting career after "Liar, Liar" included roles in "Dennis the Menace Strikes Again!" and the series "Brother's Keeper," as well as guest appearances on "Touched by an Angel" and "The Practice." He has since transitioned to behind-the-scenes work, currently serving as an executive producer for "The Ben Maller Show" on Fox Sports Radio.
