Jim Bakker, Televangelist Known for PTL Club and Scandals, Dies at 86

Televangelist Jim Bakker, once a prominent figure in Christian broadcasting through "The PTL Club," died Monday at the age of 86. His death was announced by his widow, Lori Bakker.

"It is with a broken heart that I share that my beloved husband, Jim Bakker, went home to be with the Lord this evening," Lori Bakker wrote on "The Jim Bakker Show" Facebook page. She noted that for 66 years, Jim Bakker dedicated his life to preaching the Gospel and was a pioneer of Christian television.

Bakker rose to national prominence alongside his first wife, Tammy Faye Bakker, co-hosting "The PTL Club" from 1974 to 1989. The show, which broadcast from Heritage USA, a Christian theme park and retreat center in South Carolina, became a cornerstone of religious programming for millions.

However, Bakker's career was significantly marred by scandal. In 1989, he resigned from his leadership roles amid allegations of sexual misconduct and financial improprieties. He was later convicted of fraud and conspiracy for misappropriating ministry funds and served time in prison. A key element of the scandal involved a $279,000 hush-money settlement paid to church secretary Jessica Hahn.

Lori Bakker's statement reflected on his ministry, stating, "Jim loved people deeply. He loved this ministry, and he loved the friends and partners who stood with him throughout the years. Even in his final days, his heart was still for the work of God and for the Gospel to continue reaching the world."

She concluded by saying, "Our family is grieving and we ask for your prayers and privacy during this time. Jim finished his race with faith. His voice, his vision, and his legacy will never be forgotten."
