Jill Biden described her husband, President Joe Biden, as a “hero” for withdrawing from the 2024 presidential race, asserting that his advisers and Democratic Party members urged him to pursue a second term against his original plans. She made these remarks in an interview with The Jamie Kern Lima Show.

According to Jill Biden, the president, who was 83 at the time, had initially intended to serve only one term. However, following the Republican Party's underperformance in the 2022 midterm elections, where Democrats saw success, key figures within the party and his own advisors encouraged him to run again. "His advisors were saying that. People were saying that everywhere, out on the road. He has to run," she recalled.

The president announced his decision to step down as the Democratic nominee on July 21, 2024, after a particularly challenging debate performance in June of that year, which intensified questions about his health. This decision came after a period where members of his own party had openly expressed doubts about his candidacy.

Jill Biden expressed hope that the "true story" of the events leading up to his withdrawal would be documented in historical accounts, allowing her husband to be remembered as a “hero.” She criticized what she termed the “negative overlay” that obscures the actual narrative, stating, “I’m hoping that it’s revealed in history – and that becomes Joe’s legacy.”

She emphasized that the decision to leave the race was solely President Biden's. "Joe, I think, saw the direction that things were going, and he decided to step aside. I mean, I thought what he did was heroic. I mean, he gave up everything," she said. Jill Biden stated she refrained from offering advice when President Biden sought it, telling him, “You make this decision yourself.”

During his four years in office, speculation circulated about Jill Biden's influence and her role in managing the president's public appearances, particularly concerning his health. Congressional Republicans had subpoenaed several of the Bidens' aides and the president's doctor as part of investigations into his mental fitness and decision-making.

Recounting a personal moment after the withdrawal announcement, Jill Biden shared that the president told her, “Jilly, I had no choice.”

President Biden is slated to share his perspective in his upcoming memoir, “Promise Me, America,” scheduled for release on November 17. The book's announcement suggested it would address the challenges the nation faced and the reasoning behind his decisions during his presidency.

Jill Biden also revealed her own upcoming book, which will focus on health and aging, aiming to explore what is considered normal as individuals age.
