A jewelry store owner in Bradford, West Yorkshire, successfully defended his business from a ram-raiding attempt by confronting masked assailants with a bat. The incident occurred around 1:20 p.m. on a Saturday when a group of individuals drove a 4x4 vehicle through the front of Pakistan Jewellers.
CCTV footage captured three customers inside the shop at the time of the initial impact. The vehicle reversed into the storefront, damaging the windows, which were protected by metal bars. The force of the collision sent chairs flying and caused debris to fall near the customers, who were observed clinging to each other. In a second attempt, the vehicle rammed the shopfront again, causing the entire facade to collapse, narrowly missing the individuals.
As the customers were trapped by the debris, a masked man armed with a machete climbed over the rubble. Simultaneously, other members of the group, carrying large empty bags, approached the damaged store. The shop's owner then intervened, striking one intruder with a small hammer before arming himself with a bat. He jumped over the counter and confronted the gang, prompting them to flee in a separate vehicle. The owner then used the bat to smash the rear window of the escaping car as they drove away, leaving their 4x4 behind.
Mohammad Ali Ilyas, the 20-year-old son of the owner and a co-manager of the family-run business, stated that the seven-man gang attempted to steal gold but were unsuccessful. He described the event as "horrendous" and admitted to being scared for his life but also filled with rage to protect those inside. He recounted throwing a hammer at the intruders before grabbing the bat.
The attack, which lasted approximately 35 seconds, resulted in no reported injuries. Pakistan Jewellers, a business established in 2009, is expected to remain closed for at least two weeks for repairs. This was the first time the store had been targeted. West Yorkshire Police have been notified, and the scene, including the abandoned vehicle, was cordoned off.
Despite the incident, Ilyas expressed his commitment to the family's long-standing legacy in the jewelry business, stating, "I love doing what I do. I love jewellery. We will be back."
