Jets Wide Receiver Adonai Mitchell Underwent Procedure, Status Week-to-Week
Coach Aaron Glenn confirms a 'small procedure' on Mitchell's injured finger, projecting continued absence.
New York Jets head coach Aaron Glenn announced Wednesday that wide receiver Adonai Mitchell underwent a "small procedure" on the injured finger of his right hand. This revelation comes after Glenn had previously stated that Mitchell had not had a procedure.
Mitchell was once again listed as not practicing on Wednesday. Glenn described his status as "week to week," a common indicator in coach-speak that the player is unlikely to participate in the upcoming game. "The good thing is, man, he’s moving his fingers around really, really well, and I’m still going to put him on this week-to-week deal," Glenn said.
Mitchell originally injured his finger during practice on September 24. At the time, Glenn stated the injury occurred when Mitchell caught his finger in a teammate's jersey and downplayed its severity. However, Mitchell was later seen with a large cast on the hand.
Glenn clarified that Mitchell did not immediately have the procedure done, opting to wait and assess his progress. "Well, I think he waited like a week, week and a half before he had to see how he actually was going to progress and then we wanted to go ahead and get it knocked out," Glenn explained. This decision may have contributed to the team not placing Mitchell on injured reserve.
Sunday's game against the Patriots would mark the fourth consecutive game Mitchell has missed due to the injury. Had the team anticipated a four-week absence, placing him on injured reserve would have allowed for his eventual return while freeing up a roster spot.
In other injury news, running back Breece Hall (quad), edge rusher Joseph Ossai (ankle), and offensive guard Dylan Parham (knee) did not practice and are likely to miss Sunday's game. Tight end Kenyon Sadiq (concussion) was a limited participant, showing positive signs for his availability. Safety Dane Belton (knee) was also limited in practice, while linebacker Kiko Mauigoa (quad) fully participated.
The Jets also opened the practice window for rookie wide receiver Omar Cooper Jr. on Wednesday. The team now has 21 days to decide whether to add him to the active roster. Cooper, who has been on injured reserve since suffering an ankle injury in Week 1, could be activated for Sunday's game. Glenn expressed optimism about Cooper's return, stating, "More than anything, of a rookie getting the chance to come back and get these reps that he’s been missing, and I think that’s the number one thing. Obviously, he’s a really good player, but you never want any rookie to actually miss time because the reps are valuable for these guys."
For the second consecutive week, Glenn opted for a walk-through practice instead of a full session on Wednesday, citing that he "just feel[s] like it’s best for our team right now."
Across the league, the Patriots opened the practice window for wide receiver A.J. Brown, who has been sidelined with a high-ankle sprain, though his availability for Sunday remains uncertain. Patriots cornerback Christian Gonzalez, who has missed two games with a shoulder injury, indicated he is expected to play. Additionally, Patriots edge rusher David Bailey was named AFC Defensive Player of the Week for his three-sack performance against the Browns. The Jets have signed linebacker Troy Reeder to their practice squad.
