Jets Suffer Embarrassing Home Loss to Winless Dolphins, Season Spiraling

The New York Jets' season took a significant and embarrassing turn Sunday with a 28-25 home loss to the previously winless Miami Dolphins at MetLife Stadium. The defeat dropped the Jets to a dismal 2-5 record through seven games, with 10 games remaining on their schedule.

The loss is particularly concerning as it extended head coach Aaron Glenn's record to 0-8 against AFC East opponents. The Dolphins, who entered the game at 0-5 and coming off a bye week, represented one of the few remaining teams on the Jets' schedule that they were expected to defeat. Prior to Sunday, Miami had not held a lead in any of their first five games this season.

First Half Collapse

The first half of the game was a categorical disappointment for the Jets. Their defense struggled, allowing the Dolphins to score touchdowns on three of their four possessions, establishing a commanding 21-7 halftime lead. The Dolphins held a significant advantage in time of possession, running 39 plays to the Jets' 18 and outgaining them 213-114 in the first half, with 103 of those yards coming on the ground.

Miami opened the scoring on their first possession with a 7-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Malik Willis to Caleb Douglas. This marked the first lead of the season for the Dolphins and the first career NFL touchdown for Douglas. The Jets managed to tie the game at 7-7 on their subsequent drive with a 13-yard touchdown pass from Geno Smith to tight end Mason Taylor. However, the Dolphins quickly responded, taking a 14-7 lead on a 1-yard touchdown run by Ollie Gordon II, who accounted for 58 rushing yards in the first half.

Geno Smith threw an interception on the Jets' second series, picked off by Dolphins safety Michael Taaffe. This turnover marked the Jets' inability to score a touchdown on eight consecutive trips into the red zone over recent games. Smith, who had avoided throwing an interception in the first five games of the season after leading the NFL with 17 in the previous year, had now thrown two in his last two weeks. The Dolphins extended their lead to 21-7 with a 2-yard touchdown run by Willis just before halftime, capping a 15-play, 91-yard drive.

Coaching Decisions and Second Half Struggles

Amidst the first-half struggles, head coach Aaron Glenn drew criticism for his clock management. Notably, with Miami driving late in the first half, Glenn did not use one of his timeouts to stop the clock, which could have given his offense an opportunity to score before halftime. This decision was seen as another example of coaching miscues this season.

The second half began with further frustration for the Jets. After driving to the Miami 22-yard line, their possession stalled, and kicker Jason Sanders missed a 40-yard field goal attempt that struck the right upright. Despite this setback, the Jets managed to cut the deficit to 21-14 with a 3-yard touchdown pass from Smith to rookie receiver Omar Cooper Jr. in the third quarter. Cooper had a significant impact on the drive, including a 60-yard reception.

The Jets continued to chip away at the lead, narrowing it to 21-17 with an 8:57 remaining in the game on a 33-yard field goal by Sanders. However, this drive was unsatisfying for the Jets, who had achieved a first-and-goal from the half-yard line but ended up moving backward. Following this series, wide receiver Garrett Wilson was seen in a heated exchange with Smith on the sideline.

Miami re-established a more comfortable lead with a 63-yard touchdown pass from Willis to Douglas, making the score 28-17 with 4:44 left. The Jets responded with a 12-yard touchdown pass from Smith to Taylor, his second of the game, and a successful two-point conversion cut the lead to 28-25 with 3:24 remaining.

Despite the late surge, the Jets could not close the gap further. The loss leaves the team facing a familiar spiral as their season appears to be teetering on the brink of another disappointing outcome.
