Jets Secure Crucial Victory Over Browns After Late-Game Botched Snap
Braelon Allen's late touchdown and a crucial fumble recovery propel the Jets to a 17-12 win, snapping a four-game losing streak.
The New York Jets secured a vital 17-12 victory against the Cleveland Browns at MetLife Stadium on Sunday, avoiding a potentially season-defining five-game losing streak and improving their record to 2-3.
The win was significantly aided by a pivotal moment in the fourth quarter when Browns punter Corey Bojorquez mishandled a snap, giving the Jets possession at the Cleveland 23-yard line with just over three minutes remaining. Reserve linebacker Trevin Wallace recovered the loose ball, and running back Braelon Allen capitalized with a 22-yard touchdown run, giving the Jets a 17-12 lead with 3:01 left in the game.
Allen was a key contributor throughout the game, finishing with 116 rushing yards on 24 carries. His performance was crucial, especially with Breece Hall sidelined due to a quadriceps injury.
Earlier in the fourth quarter, the Browns had taken a 12-10 lead on a 29-yard touchdown pass from Deshaun Watson to Denzel Boston. However, the ensuing extra point attempt by Andre Szmyt struck the upright and missed, leaving the door open for the Jets.
The Jets had an earlier opportunity to extend their lead in the third quarter but were stymied by a forced fumble. As the Jets drove to the Cleveland 11-yard line, former Jets linebacker Quincy Williams, now with the Browns, delivered a hit that caused rookie tight end Kenyon Sadiq to fumble. The ball was recovered by Cleveland safety Ronnie Hickman. Williams, who had expressed his intent to be a "nightmare" for his former team, recorded his third forced fumble of the game on the play.
Despite the turnover, the Jets defense held the Browns to a three-and-out. The Jets then managed to take a 10-6 lead early in the fourth quarter on a 54-yard field goal by Jason Sanders.
The Jets' offense started strong, taking a 7-0 lead just 5:43 into the game with a 32-yard touchdown pass from Geno Smith to Garrett Wilson. Wilson made an acrobatic spin move around Ronnie Hickman for the score. Wilson had three catches for 70 yards on that opening drive, while Allen added 32 rushing yards.
However, the Jets' offense struggled for consistency in the first half. Following their initial touchdown drive, the team managed only 55 yards on their next four possessions before halftime. The Jets were hampered by seven penalties for 73 yards in the first half, a continuation of discipline issues from the previous week's game. Smith was also sacked three times for 27 yards.
The Browns narrowed the score to 7-3 with a 25-yard field goal in the first quarter and later added a 41-yard field goal in the second quarter, making it 7-6, which was the halftime score.
Defensively, rookie linebacker David Bailey had a standout performance for the Jets, recording three sacks, including two in the first half.
