Jets' Run Game Stumbles in Home Opener Loss to Packers
After a strong performance in Week 1, the Jets' ground attack faltered significantly against Green Bay, highlighted by critical failed conversions.
The New York Jets' potent rushing attack, which showed promise in their season-opening victory over the Titans, struggled significantly in their home opener, a 20-17 overtime loss to the Green Bay Packers. After tallying 152 yards on 39 carries against the Titans, the Jets managed just 67 yards on 27 carries against the Packers. Running backs Breece Hall and Braelon Allen combined for only 36 rushing yards in the loss, with Hall carrying 16 times for 29 yards and Allen five times for 7 yards.
A pivotal moment occurred late in the fourth quarter with the game tied at 17. The Jets failed to convert on third-and-2 with a run by Hall and subsequently on fourth-and-1 with a run by Allen, turning the ball over on downs.
"We just didn't get it, bro," Hall said after the game. "We were a few inches short, whatever. We've still got to find ways."
Earlier in the game, Hall caught a 43-yard pass on the final play of the third quarter, placing the ball at the Packers' 40-yard line. However, the offense was unable to capitalize and score on that possession. "For the offense, it hurts," Hall stated. "I feel like we could have helped the defense out a little more, shown them a little more love, put a few more points on the board so they could be a little more comfortable."
Despite the offensive struggles, the Jets' defense forced five fumbles against the Packers, but Green Bay recovered all of them. Rookie linebacker David Bailey recorded a sack on the opening play and forced a fumble in the second quarter, though it was recovered by the Packers. Safety Andre Cisco and defensive tackle Harrison Phillips also forced fumbles.
"That's just one of the unfortunate parts of it; the ball didn't bounce our way after we punched it out," said Kingsley Enagbare. "It's part of the mentality we bring. We're trying to punch the ball out, get the ball back for our offense. Just unfortunate that it didn't really go our way."
Quarterback Geno Smith, in his 100th career NFL start, was sacked four times for 29 yards, a stark contrast to the Jets' Week 1 performance where they did not allow a sack or commit a turnover.
Wide receiver and returner Isaiah Williams had a difficult first half, muffing two punt returns. Both were recovered by teammate Qwan’tez Stiggers, preventing further disaster, though Williams was flagged for an illegal fair catch signal on one of the plays.
The Jets also sustained several injuries in the first half, losing linebacker Marcelino McCrary-Ball (ankle), linebacker Kiko Mauigoa (quadriceps), and edge rusher David Onyemata (groin). All three did not return to the game.
