Jets Rookie David Bailey's Breakout Performance Boosts Defense
Rookie edge rusher David Bailey recorded three sacks and seven total tackles in the Jets' victory over the Cleveland Browns.
Rookie edge rusher David Bailey delivered a "flame thrower" performance in the New York Jets' 17-12 victory over the Cleveland Browns on Sunday, showcasing the explosive potential the team envisioned when drafting him with the No. 2 overall pick.
Bailey recorded three sacks, seven total tackles, three tackles for loss, four quarterback hits, and nine pressures. His dominant play was a significant factor in the Jets' pass rush, which sacked Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson eight times. This effort helped stifle a previously struggling Jets defense that has now held three of its first five opponents to under 200 yards of total offense, a stark improvement from the previous season.
"It felt good, man," Bailey said after the game. "It felt good to know that to do this, to compete against the highest level and I’m just proud of my D-line. I’m proud of the defense as a whole to come together."
Defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn praised Bailey's relentless effort and his ability to make plays on the quarterback. Glenn highlighted Bailey's college traits, including his "ability to bend the edge, his ability to dip, lean, use power in that lean and be able to rip up and be able to go make plays on the quarterback. His ability to make a move and then rush with power."
Bailey's performance places him in rare company. He is the seventh player in the past 25 years to record a three-sack game within his first five NFL appearances, and the first since Aidan Hutchinson in 2022. For the Jets, Bailey joins Hugh Douglas (1995) as the only rookies in franchise history to achieve three sacks in a single game.
Despite some earlier questions about his NFL start, Bailey had insisted he was focused on his role and not external noise. His standout game against the Browns validates the Jets' high draft selection and offers a promising sign for the team's defensive future.
In other team news, wide receiver Tim Patrick expressed confidence in the Jets' offensive talent, while running back Braelon Allen continued to fill in effectively for Breece Hall, rushing for a career-high 116 yards and a touchdown. The team also faces challenges with several players in the concussion protocol or dealing with injuries, including Kenyon Sadiq, Hall, Adonai Mitchell, and Dylan Parham.
The Jets (2-3) will head to New England to face the Patriots next Sunday in their first AFC East matchup of the season.
