Jets Rookie David Bailey Delivers Breakout Performance with Three Sacks

New York Jets linebacker David Bailey achieved a career milestone on Sunday, recording three sacks and nine pressures in the team's 17-12 win against the Cleveland Browns. The performance, his best as a professional, came in Week 5 and began to validate the Jets' decision to select him as the second overall pick in the draft.

Bailey's breakout game included seven total tackles, tying for the team lead. His nine pressures were the most by any rookie this season. The young linebacker acknowledged the external noise surrounding his early season but stated his focus remains on internal feedback.

“I’m not really on social media, so I can’t really speak on what was said,” Bailey said after the game. “But all that I feel like matters is what my coaches are telling me and what my teammates are telling me.”

One of Bailey's most impactful sacks occurred in the fourth quarter on a critical third-and-30 situation. With the Jets leading 10-6, he broke through the Browns' offensive line to sack quarterback Deshaun Watson. He also made a key stop on a run play in the fourth quarter and generated pressure on a subsequent third down.

Bailey's strong showing began earlier in the game. He recorded his first sack on the opening play of the Browns' second possession, capitalizing on a fumbled snap. His second sack came on a play where he had a clear path to Watson. Head coach Aaron Glenn expressed that this performance was expected.

“That’s who David is, and we expected that,” Glenn said. Prior to Sunday's game, Bailey had accumulated two sacks and 18 tackles through his first four games.

Bailey's three sacks marked the most by a Jets player in a single game since Will McDonald IV recorded four against the Browns last season. According to Next Gen Stats, Bailey now leads all rookies with 26 pressures and five sacks this season. He is on pace to challenge the 14.5 sacks he recorded in his final collegiate year at Texas Tech.

Edge rusher Kingsley Enagbare commented that Bailey's performance was not surprising and that it was "a matter of time before he exploded on the scene." Bailey himself expressed satisfaction with his performance.

“It felt good, man,” Bailey said. “It felt good to know that I’m able to do this, to compete at the highest level.”

Jets linebacker David Bailey (31) leaves the field after the Jets defeated the Cleveland Browns 17-12 in East Rutherford, N.J., Sunday, Oct. 11, 2026.
