Jets' Receiving Corps Hampered by Injuries, Opening Door for Sadiq

The New York Jets' receiving corps is facing a significant depletion due to ongoing injuries, potentially creating a larger opportunity for rookie tight end Kenyon Sadiq.

Wide receiver Adonai Mitchell is currently listed as questionable for Sunday's game against the Lions after suffering a finger injury during practice. He was observed with his right hand wrapped and two fingers taped together. The team is already without receivers Omar Cooper Jr., who is on injured reserve with a high ankle sprain, and Arian Smith, who is out for the season after an ACL tear. Tight end Mason Taylor has also been ruled out due to a thumb injury.

These absences could lead to increased involvement for Sadiq in the passing game, aligning with the team's expectations when they selected him with the 16th overall pick. Through the first two games, Sadiq has recorded five catches for 38 yards and one rushing touchdown, with six targets. He expressed that adjusting to the faster pace and technical proficiency of the professional game has been a learning experience.

"The game is definitely much faster," Sadiq told The Post. "People are just a lot more technically sound. At the end of the day, it’s just like, don’t overcomplicate things. Just go out there and do the same thing you know how to do in college."

Sadiq is looking to emulate the impact of Lions tight end Sam LaPorta, who had a strong rookie season in 2023 with 86 receptions for 889 yards and 10 touchdowns. "I’ve definitely watched film on him," Sadiq said of LaPorta. "He does a really good job in both the run and pass game. His catch point, creating separation from the top, just being kind of elusive and sneaky, he’s really good at. He’s definitely fun to watch."

If Mitchell is unable to play, Isaiah Williams is expected to step in as the No. 2 receiver alongside Garrett Wilson. Williams had a difficult outing in Week 2 against the Packers, marked by a muffed punt and penalties. Head coach Aaron Glenn indicated that the team may elevate Sterling Shepard or Tyler Johnson from the practice squad to add depth at the receiver position.

Additionally, kicker Jason Sanders will continue to handle kicking duties for Sunday's game. The Jets will need to sign him to the active roster if they intend to keep him as their primary kicker beyond this point. Edge rusher Joseph Ossai, who has been sidelined with a foot injury, is questionable for Sunday's game after being a full participant in practice. Safety Minkah Fitzpatrick (groin) and linebacker Kiko Mauigoa (quad) are out, and running back Kene Nwangwu (back) is doubtful.
