Jets' Offense Gets a Boost with Return of Cooper Jr., Sadiq
Rookie receiver Omar Cooper Jr. and tight end Kenyon Sadiq are expected to play against the Patriots, offering much-needed help to a struggling offense.
The New York Jets' offense will receive a much-needed infusion of talent with the anticipated return of rookie receiver Omar Cooper Jr. and rookie tight end Kenyon Sadiq for their AFC East opener against the New England Patriots.
Sadiq suffered a concussion in last Sunday's game against the Cleveland Browns but was able to practice fully on Friday. Cooper, who has been sidelined since Week 1 with an ankle injury sustained during his first NFL reception, is also expected to be available. Their presence could alleviate some of the pressure on star wideout Garrett Wilson, who is anticipated to be matched up against Patriots cornerback Christian Gonzalez.
The Jets' offense has struggled recently, managing only 29 points over their last two games. They currently rank 23rd in passing, 26th in total offense, and 27th in points scored.
Meanwhile, the Patriots' offense has shown significant improvement, particularly in recent weeks. Quarterback Drake Maye has thrown seven touchdown passes over the last two games, contributing to New England scoring 74 points in victories against the Bills and Raiders. The Patriots' defense has also been strong, allowing an average of 18.8 points per game, ranking fourth in the league.
To combat the Patriots' potent offense, the Jets aim to control the clock by establishing their run game. Backup running back Braelon Allen is coming off a career-best performance against the Browns, where he rushed for 116 yards on 24 carries and scored the game-winning touchdown in the fourth quarter.
"I thought Braelon did a hell of a job, and not just Braelon but the whole O-line and the run concepts that we had," Jets coach Aaron Glenn said. "And even a couple runs that [Isaiah Davis] got I thought were pretty good. So, coming into this week, knowing that we’re going against a good defense, a tough opponent, it’s going to be critical for us to make sure we establish that run game so we can open up everything else when it comes to the passing game."
While New England will likely focus on limiting Allen, the returns of Sadiq and Cooper are crucial for the Jets' aerial attack. Sadiq, a first-round draft pick, had a standout game in Week 3 with seven catches for 105 yards. Cooper, also a highly drafted rookie, flashed potential in the opener against the Titans with a 30-yard catch and run before his injury.
"Excited to see him back out there and excited about what he can contribute to this offense," offensive coordinator Frank Reich said of Cooper.
