Jets Offense Aims to Prove Week 1 Competence Was No Fluke Against Packers
After a surprisingly effective offensive showing in their season opener, the New York Jets face a tougher test against the Green Bay Packers and look to build momentum.
The New York Jets' offense, which displayed unexpected competence in its Week 1 victory, faces the Green Bay Packers on Sunday in its home opener, seeking to demonstrate that its performance was not an anomaly. The Jets' offense generated 367 total yards against the Tennessee Titans and controlled the game, showcasing a potent run game and the ability to execute deep passes in a 23-10 win.
This Week 2 matchup presents a step up in competition, as the Jets face a Packers team that conceded 39 points to the Minnesota Vikings in its season opener. Despite the increased challenge, offensive coordinator Frank Reich expressed confidence in the team's current offensive standing. "I think we’re at a good spot offensively," Reich stated. "I feel we’re in a really good spot coming off a game in which we played winning football and put a lot of good things on tape that we feel good about."
However, Reich acknowledged that the Jets left potential points on the field against the Titans and identified areas for improvement. "We left some points on the scoreboard and had some things to clean up and just have to have this obsession to continue to get better and get ready for the next opponent," he said. "Got to clean up those mistakes, can’t leave those points on against a team like we’re about to play this week."
The Jets' offensive line was a notable strength in Week 1, creating significant openings for the run game and providing solid protection for quarterback Geno Smith. If the offensive line can maintain this level of performance, the Jets have an opportunity to improve to 2-0 for the first time since 2015. The team is emphasizing capitalizing on opportunities, particularly following turnovers or strong special teams plays, to convert drives into points.
"Me and Garrett [Wilson] talked about this quite a bit," said coach Aaron Glenn. "We want to be an offense that’s opportunistic. So, when we get a turnover, when we get a long return, when we get the ball in a position to where we should get points, man we want to take advantage of those opportunities. And we didn’t do that to the fullest, and that’s something that we really want to work on this week."
