Jets' Late Rally Falls Short Against Lions in 31-24 Loss
A late surge by the Jets, including a go-ahead touchdown and two-point conversion, was ultimately not enough as the Lions secured a 31-24 victory.
DETROIT — The New York Jets' comeback attempt against the favored Detroit Lions fell short on Sunday, resulting in a 31-24 loss at Ford Field. The Jets trailed for much of the game but managed to tie the score late in the fourth quarter.
The pivotal moment came with 8:32 remaining when the Jets' defense stopped the Lions on a fourth-down attempt at midfield. Taking possession at their own 46-yard line, the Jets embarked on a game-tying drive. On fourth-and-6 from the Detroit 23-yard line, quarterback Geno Smith connected with wide receiver Garrett Wilson for a touchdown with 4:06 left. Smith then found Sterling Shepard, recently activated from the practice squad, for a successful two-point conversion, leveling the score at 24-24.
However, the Lions quickly responded. Jahmyr Gibbs scored his third touchdown of the game on an 11-yard reception with 2:25 remaining, putting Detroit back in front, 31-24. This marked the third consecutive game the Lions have scored 31 points.
The Jets, now 1-2 on the season, mounted one final threat, advancing the ball to the Detroit 28-yard line. But their efforts were thwarted when Lions' linebacker Chuck Clark, a former Jet, sacked the quarterback and forced a fumble. Alim McNeill recovered the ball with 42 seconds remaining, sealing the victory for the Lions, who improved to 2-1.
