Jets Defensive Coordinator Responds to Raiders' Ashton Jeanty's Tackling Comments
Brian Duker expresses confidence in his players after running back's criticism.
New York Jets defensive coordinator Brian Duker has responded to comments made by Las Vegas Raiders running back Ashton Jeanty, who criticized the Jets' willingness to tackle.
Jeanty's remarks, made on Wednesday, suggested a lack of commitment to tackling from the Jets' defense. A day later, Duker addressed the comments, expressing confidence in his team.
"I got plenty of confidence in our guys," Duker said with a smile when asked about Jeanty's statements. He indicated that the coaching staff was aware of the comments and indicated he would likely bring them to the players' attention.
Jets safety Minkah Fitzpatrick also acknowledged hearing Jeanty's remarks. "Whenever our name is brought up, whether it be by an opponent or a past opponent, it catches our eye," Fitzpatrick stated. He added that his personal approach is to always play with 110% effort, regardless of what opponents say.
Fitzpatrick suggested that such comments could serve as motivation. "At the end of the day, certain things can add more fuel to the fire, but at the end of the day, I gotta go out there and do my job." He believes the entire Jets team shares this mindset.
The Raiders have experienced a recent downturn, losing four consecutive games after starting the season 3-0. Their upcoming games are considered crucial as the NFL trade deadline approaches. Two of their recent losses were close contests decided by field goals against the Kansas City Chiefs and the Buffalo Bills, both considered Super Bowl contenders.
Jeanty has been a significant contributor for the Raiders this season, leading the team in rushing with 328 yards and three touchdowns. He has also been productive as a receiver, ranking third on the team with 34 receptions for 298 yards and one touchdown.
The Jets' defense currently ranks 24th in the league in run defense, allowing an average of 127.7 yards per game. In their recent game against the Miami Dolphins, who secured their first win of the season, the Dolphins accumulated 156 rushing yards, with Ollie Gordon II contributing 103 of those yards.
