Jets Defense Falters Against Patriots After Historic Pass-Rush Performance

The New York Jets' defense experienced a significant step back in their recent 26-19 loss to the New England Patriots, failing to register a single sack against rookie quarterback Drake Maye. This performance followed a historic outing the previous week where the Jets sacked Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson eight times.

“It’s tough to explain, to be honest with you,” Jets coach Aaron Glenn said after the game. “I have all the confidence in the world in our front and being able to cause havoc.”

The inability to pressure Maye occurred despite the Patriots losing three offensive linemen to injuries during the game. Players Morgan Moses, Alijah Vera-Tucker, and Ben Brown were all unable to finish the contest.

David Bailey, who had three sacks against the Browns, managed to force a fumble against the Patriots but could not bring Maye down. Bailey attributed the lack of sacks to the Patriots' effective chipping strategy, particularly as they dealt with their injured linemen. Jets linebacker Demario Davis cited Maye’s skill set as a factor, stating, “Maye is a very savvy quarterback. We knew that going in.”

Glenn expressed that Maye’s ability to stay on his feet and evade pressure was notable. “We’ve got to do a better job,” he commented. The Patriots also leaned on their running game to alleviate pressure on Maye, who was able to extend plays and maintain his vision downfield.

Running back Braelon Allen had a strong first half, accumulating 12 carries for 65 yards and two receptions for 26 yards. However, his involvement decreased significantly in the second half, with only five rushes for 13 yards and no catches. Glenn noted the effectiveness of Allen’s early carries but explained the team’s shift in strategy to focus on passing to catch up on the scoreboard.

The Jets' special teams unit also drew criticism from Glenn, with the exception of kicker Jason Sanders, who successfully made all four of his field goal attempts, including a 42-yarder. The team struggled in the return game and allowed two significant returns by Corey Kiner.

Linebacker Kiko Mauigoa left the game with a thigh injury and did not return.
