Jets Defense Excels in Turnover Battle Despite Lack of Interceptions

The New York Jets' defense has found a way to win the turnover battle this season, despite a league-low interception count. While their streak of 20 consecutive games without an interception ended recently with a pick by Minkah Fitzpatrick against Chicago's Tyson Bagent, the unit has compensated with a league-leading seven fumble recoveries through six games.

This marks a significant improvement from the previous season, when the Jets recovered only four fumbles, the second-lowest total in the NFL. Their 10 forced fumbles this season have already surpassed last year's total of nine. This increased takeaway ability has propelled the Jets to a plus-four turnover margin, a stark contrast to their league-worst minus-19 margin from last year.

Defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn acknowledged the unit's success, stating, "I think the players are doing a great job embracing it and understanding the impact it can have on a game. I think they’re kind of feeding off each other now. One guy gets one, it’s almost a challenge to the other guy to get one too."

A prime example of this aggressive approach was Jamien Sherwood's strip-sack of New England Patriots wide receiver DeMario Douglas in the Jets' recent loss. Sherwood chased down Douglas from behind, forcing a fumble that he then recovered. Linebacker Demario Davis highlighted the play, emphasizing the team's "effort, chasing the ball, the violence, attacking the football." He added, "That’s the mentality. It’s part of the brand of football that we want to play. A big part of creating forced fumbles is guys just running to the football. Every play is an opportunity."

In other team news, running back Breece Hall practiced as a limited participant on Thursday, marking his first activity since suffering a quad injury in Week 3. Wide receiver Adonai Mitchell, offensive lineman Dylan Parham, edge Will McDonald IV, and defensive tackle T’Vondre Sweat were also limited participants due to various injuries. Offensive lineman Max Mitchell was added to the injury report with a concussion.

Rookie wide receiver Omar Cooper Jr. was named NFL Rookie of the Week after a standout performance against the Patriots, where he recorded 103 receiving yards and a touchdown. He is the third Jets rookie to receive this award in the past four weeks, joining fellow first-round picks David Bailey and Kenyon Sadiq.
