Jets' David Bailey Doubtful for Raiders Matchup, Potentially Missing Shot at Rookie QB Mendoza

Jets pass rusher David Bailey is listed as "doubtful" with a groin injury, making it unlikely he will play in Sunday's game against the Las Vegas Raiders, according to coach Aaron Glenn. This potentially sidelines Bailey, the second overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft, for a matchup that was circled on the schedule as a prime opportunity to sack Raiders quarterback Fernando Mendoza, the top pick in the same draft class.

Bailey missed Friday's practice and was not seen in the rehab area during media viewing. Glenn indicated that Bailey would be a game-time decision, but his "doubtful" designation suggests he is nearing a near-certain miss unless his status is upgraded.

Bailey has been in strong form recently, recording 3.5 sacks and two forced fumbles in his last three games. The Jets had hoped to see him challenge Mendoza, though there was also an internal sentiment hoping the Raiders might trade down from the No. 1 pick or pass on the quarterback.

The Raiders, currently on a four-game losing streak, are sticking with veteran Kirk Cousins at quarterback. Head coach Klint Kubiak has dismissed notions of a quarterback controversy, citing the team's initial three-game winning streak and Cousins' league-leading touchdown pass total, despite the NFL's 31st-ranked rushing attack.

Mendoza, the national championship-winning quarterback, has made one appearance so far, completing 6 of 8 passes in mop-up duty. General managers Darren Mougey of the Jets and John Spytek of the Raiders are acquainted, but Mougey had previously downplayed the possibility of a trade for the top pick. The Jets selected Bailey over linebacker Arvell Reese, who was chosen fifth overall by the Giants.

The Raiders secured the top pick in a draft class with a relatively shallow quarterback pool due to a tiebreaker advantage over the Jets, Cardinals, and Titans, all of whom finished with a 3-14 record last season. Coach Glenn acknowledged Mendoza's college performance, noting his competitive spirit, toughness, and ability to galvanize teammates, in addition to his physical attributes and arm talent. "We'll be ready" regardless of whether Mendoza plays, Glenn added.
