Jets Collapse in Overtime, Fumble Away Chance at 2-0 Start

The New York Jets missed an opportunity to secure their first 2-0 start since 2015, suffering a heartbreaking 20-17 overtime loss to the Green Bay Packers at MetLife Stadium. The Jets held a 10-point lead in the fourth quarter but were ultimately undone by crucial errors and costly penalties.

Green Bay began its comeback with a 3-yard touchdown pass from Jordan Love to Christian Watson, narrowing the Jets' lead to 17-10. Following a Jets offensive failure and a punt return that placed Green Bay at the New York 19-yard line, the Packers kicked a 34-yard field goal to tie the game with 3:02 remaining in regulation.

The Jets had a chance to win in regulation, but on fourth-and-1 at midfield with 1:20 left, Braelon Allen was stopped short of the line to gain. The decision to go for it instead of punting proved consequential when the Packers failed to capitalize, forcing overtime.

In the overtime period, the Jets' offense faltered immediately. Consecutive sacks and a false start penalty pushed them deep into their own territory, leading to a punt. Green Bay then drove 58 yards, aided by an unnecessary roughness penalty, to set up Trey Smack's game-winning 26-yard field goal.

Penalties plagued both teams throughout the contest, with Green Bay committing 14 for 133 yards and New York 13 for 156 yards. However, the timing of two significant penalties against the Jets—a 38-yard pass interference call that aided Green Bay's fourth-quarter touchdown drive and a 15-yard unnecessary roughness penalty in overtime—proved particularly damaging.

Despite the collapse, the Jets' defense largely contained the Packers, holding them to 199 total yards. Jordan Love threw for 145 yards with two touchdowns, while the Jets outgained Green Bay 285-199 and controlled the ball for nearly 11 minutes longer. Quarterback Geno Smith completed 27 of 41 passes for 247 yards and one touchdown.
