Jets Aim to Reignite Offense by Prioritizing Garrett Wilson Against Dolphins

The New York Jets are emphasizing the need to get star wide receiver Garrett Wilson more involved in their offense as they prepare to face the winless Miami Dolphins. Last week's limited targets for Wilson in New England, where he received only six targets overall and two in the first three quarters, have prompted coaches to acknowledge a shift in strategy.

"Garrett is the ultimate team player and the ultimate pro," said offensive coordinator Frank Reich. "I understand that's just, he's a fiery competitor and he knows he's a playmaker, and we do too. And Garrett's been great to work with."

Despite the acknowledged frustration, Wilson leads the AFC with 35 receptions and ranks second in the conference with 48 targets. However, there have been extended periods in games where his involvement has waned.

Reich indicated that head coach Aaron Glenn regularly reminds him to get the ball to Wilson. "A.G. is always in my ear if Garrett hasn’t gotten the ball for a little bit," Reich stated. "He's, 'Hey, don't forget. Boom, get our playmakers the ball,' that kind of thing, which is good. We're trying to get to him as early and as often as we can."

The Jets' offense has struggled with situational football, including two-minute drills, third-down conversions, and red-zone scoring, tallying just four touchdowns in their last three games. Increasing Wilson's target share is seen as a potential catalyst for improvement.

"You have that confidence to be productive when you're called upon again, and then just kind of showing, reminding everyone that this is why I'm at this point," Wilson said. "And for me, it's kind of just getting my feet wet early and then, you know, let's ride."

Adding to the offensive potential, receiver Adonai Mitchell is expected to return this week after missing four games with a finger injury. This marks the first time quarterback Geno Smith will have his full receiving corps since the opening series of the season.

The Jets, currently 2-4, face a crucial juncture in their schedule. The Dolphins, despite their 0-5 record, have faced a difficult slate, with three losses coming against undefeated teams. Veteran linebacker Demario Davis emphasized the team's focus on the present.

"I don't think we're in a position to be looking at anybody's record," Davis said. "We're worried about going 1-0 every time we step out there. That's got to be our mindset. It's not like we've got all Ws and no losses where we can feel really good about our record versus a winless team. It's not like that. We've got to be ready to put our best on display every time we step out on the field."
