JetBlue has secured Spirit Airlines’ takeoff and landing slots at New York’s LaGuardia Airport, a move that would allow the carrier to expand its presence at the busy hub. The airline also intends to relocate to Spirit’s former home, Terminal A, which JetBlue noted is a terminal travelers prefer.
This development follows Spirit Airlines' cessation of operations less than three months ago. Spirit was compelled to shut down after failing to secure a $500 million bailout from the Trump administration, marking the carrier's second bankruptcy filing in under two years. The assets of the discount airline, known for its low fares and distinctive yellow Airbus fleet, are currently being processed through the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in New York.
Spirit Airlines operated at massive losses, reporting $1.61 in losses for every dollar earned, according to its March operations report. The airline, which had been a competitor to major carriers for 34 years and had grown to become the nation's eighth-largest, also faced challenges including surging jet fuel prices. Spirit's abrupt closure in May left numerous travelers stranded.
JetBlue announced its plans for the 12 roundtrip slots in a note to staff, as reported by CNBC. The airline is evaluating its network strategy, with any potential expansion not expected to occur until 2027. JetBlue previously operated from Terminal A, the Art Deco Marine Air Terminal, before moving to a newer facility.
While the slots are still subject to final court and regulatory approvals, the acquisition would represent a significant gain for JetBlue at LaGuardia, an airport known for its congested airspace and passenger crowds. Airlines are navigating strict airport guidelines and often turn to larger aircraft to increase capacity and revenue.
JetBlue has recently announced cost-cutting measures, including the closure of its flight attendant base at Newark Liberty International Airport and tech operations bases in Newark and LaGuardia. The airline is simultaneously undergoing a major expansion at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport in Florida.
