Jet2 Opens High-Security Facility to Streamline In-Flight Retail Operations
The 150,000-square-foot Retail Operations Centre in Cheshire utilizes advanced X-ray screening and data-driven inventory management.
Jet2 has opened a new, high-security Retail Operations Centre in Cheshire, a 150,000-square-foot facility that began operations in October 2023. The center is responsible for loading trolleys with food, drinks, and retail items for passengers, a process that involves meticulous optimization and X-ray screening of all items before they are loaded onto aircraft.
Streamlining Operations
The facility operates with a sophisticated system of conveyor belts and stacking. Drones are utilized for handling confectionery, and the loading process is designed to maximize space efficiency. According to the company, the production line loads approximately 300 million items annually, including five million sandwiches, ten million cans of soft drinks, and six million tubs of Pringles. The center features a control room similar to an air traffic control center and a large loading bay.

Security and Technology
The center's security measures include four dedicated X-ray scanners for processing bar carts, a measure described as a first for the UK travel industry. This level of surveillance has earned the site the nickname 'the first airport without a runway.' Entrances and exits are playfully labeled 'arrivals' and 'departures,' and murals of families on holiday adorn the walls.

The facility began with a manual hand-loading system but quickly transitioned to an automated model that is continually being refined. The operation runs 24/7 during peak summer season and for 18 hours daily at other times.
Data-Driven Approach
Jet2 leverages customer data to tailor its retail offerings. The company aims to match stock with the known preferences of passengers on specific flights, viewing itself as a retailer with "130 shops in the sky." This data-driven approach allows for the removal of unnecessary weight from flights, contributing to significant fuel savings and reduced carbon emissions. According to John Davis, Product & Retail Director, this process has removed around 100kg of weight per flight, resulting in an annual fuel saving of over 1,200 tonnes and a reduction in carbon emissions exceeding 3,900 tonnes.

Strategic Development
The initiative to create the central operations center was a response to disruptions in the travel industry caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, which highlighted issues with stocking flights. Jet2's strong financial position during the pandemic allowed for significant investment, including the purchase of new aircraft and the development of this retail operations hub. The airline aims to be largely self-sufficient in its supply and loading processes.
Expansion and Guarantees
Beyond retail operations, Jet2 has expanded its destination offerings by adding Egypt, marking its longest flight route to date. The Canary Islands, Greek islands, and Turkey remain popular destinations among British travelers. The airline has also reaffirmed its 'No Fuel Surcharges' guarantee, assuring customers that the price booked will be the final price, with no additional fuel surcharges applied across all flights and holidays.
