Jesus Luzardo Placed on Injured List, Phillies' Playoff Hopes Dimmed

The Philadelphia Phillies will be without a key member of their pitching rotation during the critical stretch of the season, as left-handed starter Jesus Luzardo has been placed on the 15-day injured list. The move, retroactive to Saturday, is due to left shoulder inflammation and will sideline the pitcher for the remainder of the regular season.

Luzardo was scratched from his scheduled start on Saturday. While his absence is a blow to the team's immediate playoff push, interim manager Don Mattingly indicated that Luzardo has not been ruled out for postseason play if the Phillies qualify. Luzardo himself expressed confidence, stating it is "guaranteed" he will be back for the playoffs.

The Phillies' postseason prospects remain uncertain as they currently hold a slim lead. Entering Tuesday's games, Philadelphia had a 4-6 record in their last 10 contests, placing them just one game ahead of the San Diego Padres for the second wild card spot in the National League. The Padres have been on a strong run, going 9-1 in their last 10 games, while the Arizona Diamondbacks are 3 1/2 games behind the Phillies and outside the playoff picture.

This season has been a standout performance for Luzardo in his second year with the Phillies. He has compiled a 2.87 earned run average and a 1.08 walks plus hits per inning pitched, with 221 strikeouts in 178 1/3 innings pitched. He is also among the league leaders, being one of only 10 pitchers this season to have thrown a shutout.

In a corresponding move, the Phillies are calling up right-handed pitcher Grant Holman. The team has a two-game series against the Washington Nationals beginning Tuesday, followed by a four-game series against the New York Mets in Queens.
