Jessica Lange Set for "American Horror Story" Return With One Condition

Jessica Lange agreed to return for "American Horror Story" Season 13, but only if she could reprise all four of her previous characters from the anthology series. She revealed this condition during an appearance on "Live with Kelly and Mark," ahead of the season premiere.

Series co-creator Ryan Murphy had initially approached Lange about reprising her role as Constance Langdon from "Murder House." However, Lange stated her willingness to return was contingent on portraying all four of her characters. "I said, ‘I’ll come back if I can [play] all four characters,'" Lange told Entertainment Weekly.

When asked if this included Sister Jude Martin from "Asylum," Lange confirmed, "Yes, from our season, yes! But not in the habit. She’s in the later part of the season — she’s institutionalized herself — when she’s a patient there." Mark Consuelos, who appeared in "Asylum" as Spivey, was also present for the discussion.

Lange's previous characters include Constance Langdon (Seasons 1 and 8), Fiona Goode (Season 3), and Elsa Mars (Season 4). She noted that Season 13 features a cast composed almost entirely of returning actors. "Everybody is a returning character, pretty much," Lange said.

She described her experience returning to the series as "great," expressing enjoyment in playing the characters again. Lange also hinted at a potential fifth, unnamed "mystery character" she might portray this season, although she dismissed the idea of it leading to a Season 14 return.

In August, Murphy had stated that Lange's condition for returning was to perform a musical number. "I just thought the number 13 was infused with so much in the horror genre, and I wanted to do a greatest hits season," Murphy explained. "I didn’t know what it was, but I knew that I could only do it with Jessica, so we had dinner and I pitched [it to] her and she said, ‘Great. I’m in as long as I have a musical number.'"
