A vacationer's viral social media post about the significant cost of a Jersey Shore getaway has sparked a debate over whether the popular destination justifies its price tag. Cait Carr Vogel, a mother influencer from Philadelphia, shared that her family annually spends $10,000 for a "no-frills" rental home at the Jersey Shore, a figure that drew considerable online attention.
Vogel highlighted that the rental cost does not include basic amenities, stating, "You need to bring your own sheets, toilet paper, paper towels. No food. You gotta bring your own coffee, everything." She also noted the inconvenience of parking limitations, adding, "No parking... You need to walk to the beach with all of your crap." In her viral video, she summarized the experience as "Basically, we’re paying $10,000 to camp."
The comments on Vogel's post revealed a divide in opinion. Some social media users expressed disbelief at the cost, comparing it unfavorably to international travel options. "You could pay $5K and be in the Caribbean," one commenter wrote, while another suggested, "$10,000 will get you an AMAZING trip to Greece!!"
Others defended the expense, attributing the appeal of the Jersey Shore to tradition and sentimental value. "For those outside the tristate, [saying], ‘Oh $10k for Euro vacation, etc,’ just know it’s tradition," one user explained. "For families that vacation down the shore, it’s the same town every year, same rental [or] hotel, same groups of vacation friends that the kids grow up with and see only that week, same plans like boardwalk pizza on the first night and mini golf on Wednesdays and dinners at the same ‘nice’ restaurants." This user concluded, "[That’s] what makes it all worth it."
The Jersey Shore, which gained significant cultural recognition through a popular MTV series in the 2010s, continues to attract visitors. The area has seen a resurgence, drawing in Gen Z demographics with high-priced VIP access to popular establishments and luxury coastal properties reportedly selling for as much as $13 million. Despite the high costs, influencers and tastemakers are often seen frequenting its beaches and nightlife, contributing to its trendy image.
