Jersey charities are emphasizing the significant impact of legacy donations, urging individuals to consider leaving gifts in their wills despite current economic challenges.
Research conducted for the Association of Jersey Charities indicates that while 89% of respondents donated money in the past 12 months, affordability remains a key barrier, particularly for younger people and lower-income households. However, charity representatives stress that legacy giving remains a crucial source of support.
Marcus Liddiard, a representative from the charities, stated that gifts left in wills do not need to be substantial to be impactful. "The ones you hear about often can be the really big ones, but some of most impactful ones are the smaller everyday ones," he said. He also noted that beyond financial contributions, opportunities exist for everyone to contribute through volunteering and offering time, skills, and support, which are considered equally valuable.
Bethany Gallichan echoed these sentiments, acknowledging the public's struggle with the cost of living crisis. "I do understand people are struggling with the cost of living crisis, but we do have people who have the ability to leave those gifts, and they can be so transformational, especially to those charitable organisations that are seeing costs rising and services in higher demand," she commented.
These legacy gifts can play a vital role in funding services for islanders facing financial hardship, helping charities meet the increasing demand for their support.
