Jerry Jones: Troy Aikman Could Join Cowboys Front Office

Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said it is "very possible" that former quarterback Troy Aikman could join the team's front office as his current contract with ESPN is set to expire.

Jones made the comments on Tuesday during an appearance on 105.3 The Fan, stating that Aikman is "certainly qualified" for an NFL front office role. "Yes, I could and would," Jones said regarding the possibility of Aikman taking a position with the organization. "It’s that simple because I do think that much of him with his basic command and knowledge of NFL football. He’s certainly qualified to do anything mentioned. He’s outstanding."

Jones added, "The answer is not necessarily that we’re going to do anything more direct with the team at this time, but don’t rule it out. It is very possible."

Aikman, 59, has been public about his contract situation with ESPN, where he serves as the analyst for "Monday Night Football" alongside Joe Buck. His contract is up at the end of the season, and unlike Buck, he has not yet been approached for an extension. Buck signed a six-year, $108 million contract extension with ESPN in September.

Aikman previously expressed that he would have "a hard time not taking a good look" at an opportunity to work with his former team of 12 years, with whom he won three Super Bowls. He told Mike Fischer last week, "This week, he [Jones] said some really kind things, which meant a lot to me, quite honestly. So, yeah, I would welcome any conversation with Jerry, and quite honestly I don’t know if there would be, or if there ever would be an opportunity. But if Jerry came to me and felt that, in his heart, I could lend some services that would help make them better, I would — I’d have a hard time not taking a good look at that."

Aikman, who was drafted by Jones in 1989, also served as a consultant for the Miami Dolphins during their search for a coach and general manager earlier this offseason. However, Front Office Sports reported that he does not have a "formal and ongoing agreement" with the Dolphins.
