Jerry Jones Slams Cowboys' 'Mind-Boggling' Defensive Performance After Bucs Loss
The Cowboys owner expressed extreme disappointment following the team's unexpected defeat to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones voiced his frustration and disbelief on Friday regarding the team's defensive struggles, particularly after their recent Thursday Night Football loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The Buccaneers, despite playing with a backup quarterback and numerous injuries, managed to gain 419 yards against the Cowboys' defense.
Speaking on Dallas' 105.3 The Fan, Jones described the defensive performance as "mind boggling," citing statistics from the team's last five games. So far in the 2026 season, the 2-3 Cowboys have surrendered more yards than all but one other NFL team, continuing a trend from the previous season where the defense hampered the team's offense.
Despite his strong criticism, Jones stated that he is not currently considering firing any members of head coach Brian Schottenheimer's staff. "That is just not in the best interest of our team," Jones said. "We played five games. We have 12 more regular season games and hopefully playoff games to go."
Christian Parker, who was hired in January to improve a defense that surrendered the most points in the NFL in 2025, will retain his play-calling duties for now. Jones acknowledged that the absence of newly acquired cornerback Joey Porter Jr., due to illness, was a factor in the team's defensive performance against Tampa Bay.
The Buccaneers secured their victory even without starting quarterback Baker Mayfield, with rookie Jalon Daniels contributing 189 passing yards and one touchdown. The decisive moment came on Dallas' final drive when quarterback Dak Prescott's pass was intercepted by Tampa Bay's Alex Anzalone after a deflection.
Jones was visibly angered by the outcome, seen slamming his hands on a table in his suite as the game concluded. He later expressed to reporters that he was "extraordinarily disappointed" and that the team "really do need to get it done."
