Jerry Jones Rules Out Retirement After Birthday Chat With Bill Clinton
The Dallas Cowboys owner, who recently turned 84, referenced Toby Keith in dismissing retirement rumors.
Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones stated that he is not retiring from his role, even after celebrating his 84th birthday. Jones shared that he discussed retirement with former President Bill Clinton during his birthday festivities.
"No, I’m not. I was with President Clinton yesterday and the day before on my birthday and we were talking about that and I paraphrased the great Toby Keith, ‘We’re not going to let that old man in,’" Jones said in an appearance on Fox News’ "Fox & Friends."
Jones, who purchased the Cowboys in February 1989 and appointed himself general manager, has overseen three Super Bowl victories during his tenure. His home, featured in a segment on "Fox & Friends," displays his three Super Bowl trophies and numerous photographs with political figures, including former Presidents Bill Clinton, Donald Trump, and George W. Bush.
Despite his longevity with the team, the Cowboys have faced defensive challenges. "Well, let’s say this, we changed everything on the defense. Not until literally I bought (the) team have we had more changes. We’ve changed out the personnel dramatically, we’ve changed out the coaching staff totally, we’ve changed out the schemes involved," Jones commented on the team's performance. "We’re evolving, but it’s probably a little more time needed than I had anticipated when we made these changes this year."
Last season, the Cowboys' defense allowed an average of 30.1 points per game, ranking last in the NFL. The team has since made significant personnel and coaching changes, including acquiring defensive tackle Quinnen Williams, edge rusher Rashan Gary, and linebacker Dee Winters through trades. They also drafted safety Caleb Downs in the first round of the 2026 NFL Draft, signed safety Jalen Thompson, and acquired cornerback Cobie Durant. The defensive coordinator position also saw a change, with Christian Parker, 34, hired to replace Matt Eberflus. Currently, the Cowboys are ranked 27th in scoring defense, allowing 27.2 points per game.
The Cowboys, currently with a 2-3 record despite ranking seventh in scoring offense with 27.6 points per game, are set to play the Green Bay Packers on Sunday night.
