Jerry Jones Expresses Frustration Over Cowboys' Loss to Ravens
Owner Jerry Jones stated there is 'no explanation' for the critical late-game errors that led to the Dallas Cowboys' defeat against the Baltimore Ravens, dropping the team's record to 1-2.
Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has voiced his strong dissatisfaction with the team's recent loss to the Baltimore Ravens, a game he described as one the Cowboys "gave away." The defeat, which occurred Sunday in Rio, has dropped the Cowboys' season record to 1-2.
Jones indicated that the team is conducting a thorough review of the events that led to the loss. A particular point of contention is quarterback Dak Prescott's decision to throw the ball away on a third-and-goal play with 14 seconds remaining in a tied game. At the time, receiver George Pickens was reportedly open in the end zone.
"There’s no explanation you’re satisfied with. None," Jones said in an interview with 105.3 the FAN on Wednesday. "They don’t have one that they’re satisfied with. We made mistakes during that time, there’s no question about it. There’s no explanation. There’s an evaluation of how to not make the same mistakes again, which is what you should be doing. We can’t get that back. No way to get it back. What you can do is use it — if there’s any aspect of it that you want to just not even think happened. Any aspect of it, use it to get better."
The critical sequence began after a pass interference penalty against the Ravens gave the Cowboys first-and-goal at the Baltimore 2-yard line with 23 seconds left, trailing 31-28. Prescott's initial pass to Pickens on first down was incomplete. A false start penalty on tight end Luke Schoonmaker moved the ball back to the 7-yard line.
The Cowboys were forced to use their final timeout following a short run by Prescott before his throwaway. A subsequent field goal briefly tied the game.
Following the touchback on the throwaway, the Ravens started their possession at their own 35-yard line with seven seconds remaining. Lamar Jackson completed a 27-yard pass to Zay Flowers, and the Ravens called their final timeout with one second on the clock. kicker Tyler Loop then converted a 56-yard field goal as time expired to secure the win for Baltimore.
After the game, offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer suggested he may have "overcoached" Prescott by instructing him to either complete a pass to Pickens or throw the ball away, given the time constraints.
The Cowboys are set to face the Houston Texans, who are currently 0-3, on Sunday. The game is scheduled for 1 p.m. at NRG Stadium in Houston.
