Jerry Jones Expresses Confidence in Tony Romo's Future Post-CBS Exit
Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones offered strong support for Tony Romo, emphasizing his potential despite recent professional and personal challenges.
Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has publicly endorsed Tony Romo, expressing optimism about the former quarterback's future following his departure from CBS and a recent drunk driving arrest.
"Tony is one of the most valued relationships that I have on a personal basis," Jones stated during his weekly appearance on 105.3 The Fan’s “Shan and RJ.” “I love him, and I’m sorry that this has evolved this way this year because I enjoyed him so much in what he could bring to the NFL and, frankly, I was proud of him as a former Cowboy. Now, having said all of that, he’s just getting started. He really is. I say that with all sincerity. He’s just getting started."
Jones acknowledged Romo's recent setbacks, drawing a parallel to his own experiences with mistakes. "And he certainly has made some mistakes. I can’t look in my mirror without seeing what can happen when you experience mistakes. But he realizes that there’s an area of his life that he wants to do better in. That’s been said ad nauseum, publicly. He’s got great opportunity ahead of him. I don’t know of anyone, period, that has a better future than Tony Romo. And I’m excited for him. He’s not only got great talent, but he’s a hell of a man."
Romo was initially placed on indefinite leave from his broadcasting role after his arrest in July. Subsequently, CBS and Romo officially parted ways last week.
Following Romo's exit, J.J. Watt has assumed his position in CBS's top broadcast booth, joining Jim Nantz and Tracy Wolfson.
Romo, who joined CBS in 2017 and signed a significant 10-year, $180 million contract in 2020, is now free to explore new opportunities. He is reportedly set to retain a substantial portion of his remaining contract value from CBS. Romo has indicated he plans to take time off following the recent events.
