Jenny McCarthy Claims Tom Cruise Tried to Recruit Her and Jim Carrey into Scientology
McCarthy shared the anecdote during a podcast appearance, recounting an encounter at Cruise's 2006 wedding to Katie Holmes.
Jenny McCarthy has claimed that Tom Cruise attempted to draw her and her then-boyfriend, Jim Carrey, into Scientology at Cruise's 2006 wedding to Katie Holmes.
McCarthy made the assertion on her podcast, where she spoke with former Scientologist Anne Gollert Hill. She stated that Cruise, whom she dated in the past, attempted to recruit her into the organization during the wedding festivities. According to McCarthy, the incident occurred at the rehearsal dinner, where she and Carrey were seated across from the bride and groom.
At the time of the wedding, Cruise and Holmes had recently welcomed their daughter, Suri. McCarthy recalled that a nanny brought Suri to the table, and McCarthy, describing herself as a "baby person," asked if she could hold the infant. She recounted that the entire party turned to look at her, an experience she likened to a scene from "Rosemary's Baby," and described it as receiving "the Scientology stare."
After Holmes handed Suri to McCarthy, she spoke a few words to the baby before returning her to her mother. McCarthy stated that she felt she was "in the belly of the beast" at that moment. She also mentioned that Cruise introduced her to David Miscavige, the leader of the Church of Scientology, who was serving as Cruise's best man. McCarthy's lighthearted remark about Miscavige's role reportedly made him uncomfortable.
McCarthy also shared that Cruise had invited her and Carrey to his home in Aspen, but Carrey was hesitant, fearing they would be pressured to join Scientology.
McCarthy and Carrey dated from 2005 to 2010 and have remained close. McCarthy later married Donnie Wahlberg, and Carrey recently married Min Ah. Cruise and Holmes divorced in 2012.
