Jenny McCarthy Claims Katie Holmes 'Looked Like a Deer in Headlights' During Tom Cruise Marriage

Jenny McCarthy has shared her recollections of Katie Holmes' marriage to Tom Cruise, stating that Holmes "looked like a deer in headlights" during their time together. McCarthy made these remarks on her podcast, "The Jenny McCarthy Wahlberg Show," where she described observing a shift in Holmes' demeanor well into the marriage.

McCarthy recounted being friendly with Holmes and Cruise while she was dating Jim Carrey. She mentioned pulling Holmes aside at social events to check on her well-being, noting that Holmes seemed different from the person she knew prior to the marriage. "During the wedding part, she still seemed like Katie, but into the marriage it seemed there was a shift in her," McCarthy claimed.

The actress suggested that Holmes appeared uncomfortable with Cruise's involvement in the Church of Scientology and the presence of individuals McCarthy described as "handlers" from the religion who accompanied Cruise. "They would come over and Tom would have his group and they would just follow him from room to room," McCarthy stated. "Those handlers are there because they don’t want them to stray or say the wrong thing."

McCarthy also recalled attending Holmes and Cruise's 2006 wedding in Italy, describing the contrasting atmospheres of the two sides of the ceremony. While Holmes' maid of honor delivered a speech referencing their college days of parties and sleepovers, Cruise's best man, Scientology leader David Miscavige, gave a 30-minute address about Cruise and Holmes being the "most important couple in the world."

"It was 30 minutes long, about how Tom and Katie are now going to be the most important couple in the world," McCarthy said. "I’m sitting next to Will Smith, JLo, Jim, the crème de la crème." She observed Holmes' family appearing bewildered by the speech and Holmes herself "trying to smile her way through it."

McCarthy further detailed an unsettling experience at the wedding rehearsal dinner when she asked to hold the couple's newborn daughter, Suri. She described receiving a collective glare from those present, which she termed the "Scientology stare," and felt as though she was "in the belly of the beast."

McCarthy also claimed that Cruise and his associates frequently tried to encourage her and Carrey to join Scientology. Despite finding Cruise to be a "very nice human being," she perceived him as always seeming "programmed."

Cruise, who joined the Church of Scientology in 1986, became a prominent advocate for the religion. Holmes became involved after starting her relationship with Cruise in 2005 but filed for divorce in 2012. Reports indicated that her primary motivation for leaving Cruise and the church was to protect Suri from being raised within Scientology. Suri has reportedly been estranged from her father since the divorce and, in July, legally dropped his surname.
