Jennifer Lawrence has spoken out about confronting film executives after discovering that unauthorized crew members were present during her nude scenes.
The Oscar-winning actress, 36, described the situation as a breach of privacy and stated she "came down hard" on those responsible. Lawrence suggested that a less established actress might feel pressured to endure such situations to avoid being labeled "difficult" and potentially harming her career.
Speaking on the "Call Her Daddy" podcast, Lawrence explained that her willingness to speak up has increased as her career has progressed. "I speak up more because I'm also aware of the place that I have in the industry," she said. "There was like an instance on set where crew members who weren't approved when I was doing nudity, you know, were on set or something."
Lawrence emphasized that establishing clear boundaries at her level is crucial to protect emerging actors. "If we're not setting that kind of principle at the level at which we're doing it right now, then what on earth is going to happen to an 18-year-old unknown?" she questioned.
She elaborated on the difficult choice a young actress might face: "If she shows up and there's people that aren't approved, she's going to be in a position like, do I say something and get a reputation for being difficult? Or do I just let these people that I'm not comfortable seeing me naked see me naked?"
Lawrence did not disclose the specific film, the timing of the incident, or the identities of those involved. However, her remarks highlight a growing concern in Hollywood regarding the management of scenes involving nudity or simulated sex. Current guidelines from the American actors' union SAG-AFTRA mandate closed sets for such scenes, with access limited to essential personnel. The union also advocates for intimacy coordinators to ensure performers' consent and safety.
This is not the first time Lawrence has discussed her experiences with nudity on set. Reflecting on her role in the 2018 thriller "Red Sparrow," she recalled initial fear due to the film requiring her to appear naked, particularly after her private photos were leaked online in 2014. She contrasted that experience with her choice to be nude in "Red Sparrow," calling it a reclaiming of agency and a "normal" experience compared to the non-consensual release of her images.
Lawrence also shared her comfortable experience filming intimate scenes with Robert Pattinson for the upcoming drama "Die My Love." She noted that she felt safe with Pattinson, attributing it to his respectful demeanor and their conversations about personal lives rather than anything related to the scene.
Previously, Lawrence had expressed that some male actors might react negatively if an actress rejects their advances, leading to "punishment," though she clarified that Pattinson did not exhibit such behavior.
