Sandra Bullock has shared that Jennifer Aniston was the first person she confided in about her longtime partner Bryan Randall's battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Randall, who died on August 5, 2023, at age 57, had been secretly fighting the disease for three years.
Bullock revealed on the podcast "Smartless" that Randall had requested his diagnosis remain private. Initially, Bullock shared the news only with her sister. However, the "heavy weight" of caring for Randall while unable to outwardly express her grief became overwhelming, leading her to confide in Aniston.
This revelation highlights the depth of their three-decade-long friendship, which began under unusual circumstances. The two actresses met in the 1990s when they were both introduced to Tate Donovan, an actor they had both previously dated. Aniston dated Donovan from 1995 to 1998, while Bullock was engaged to him from 1992 to 1995.
Aniston and Bullock reconnected later at a mutual friend's wedding. They have supported each other through significant life events, including Bullock's support for Aniston during her divorce from Justin Theroux. Despite working in the same industry, they had not previously collaborated professionally but have always championed each other's careers and shared interests such as interior design and travel.
Bullock described the period of Randall's illness as a "traumatic diagnosis" that isolated her. She was simultaneously managing Randall's care, raising their two adopted children, and navigating the COVID-19 pandemic. Her younger daughter, who viewed Randall as a father figure, was also impacted.
ALS, also known as motor neurone disease in some countries, is a rare and incurable progressive condition that affects the nervous system, leading to muscle paralysis. Approximately half of ALS patients have a life expectancy of three years after symptom onset, though survival can extend for decades. The disease gained widespread recognition in the U.S. as "Lou Gehrig's disease" after the baseball player's death in 1941.
