Jenna Fischer, best known for her role as Pam Beesly on "The Office," has revealed that the demanding schedule of leading a television series led her to seek a different career path. The actress shared that starring on the sitcom "Splitting Up Together" involved "really, really hard" hours, often reaching 65 to 70 hours per week.

During an appearance on the podcast "Dinner's On Me With Jesse Tyler Ferguson," Fischer explained that these intense workweeks conflicted with her desire to spend time with her young children. "I just decided after that that being the lead of a television show or even a regular on a television show was not gonna be a fit for me anymore," she stated.

The cancellation of "Splitting Up Together" in 2019, after two seasons, proved to be a turning point for Fischer. This event allowed her to pivot into podcasting, co-hosting the "Office Ladies" rewatch podcast with her former "The Office" co-star Angela Kinsey. This new venture provided a more flexible lifestyle, enabling her to be present for her children's school events.

"I was the agent of my own time, the architect of my own time, so to speak. And that was great," Fischer said. Her children, who were very young when she transitioned, came to associate her with her podcasting work, sometimes referring to her simply as "a podcaster."

"The Office," an American adaptation of the UK series created by Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant, aired for nine seasons on NBC from 2005 to 2013. The show starred Steve Carell as the regional manager of a paper company's Scranton, Pennsylvania branch, with Fischer, John Krasinski, Rainn Wilson, and Mindy Kaling among its ensemble cast. Following the show's conclusion, many of its cast members found continued success in television and film.

In 2024, Fischer announced she was cancer-free after being diagnosed with Stage 1 Triple Positive breast cancer in late 2023. She had shared her diagnosis in October 2024, noting that the cancer was aggressive but treatable. After undergoing surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation, she completed her treatment.
