Jenna Dewan Gets New "Dancing With the Stars" Partner Amid Val Chmerkovskiy's Suspension

Jenna Dewan will perform on the upcoming "Dancing With the Stars" episode with professional dancer Alan Bersten after her regular partner, Val Chmerkovskiy, received a one-week suspension.

Chmerkovskiy's suspension was announced after he made a controversial social media post referencing Will Smith's Oscars incident, which he stated was in defense of his wife and fellow "DWTS" pro, Jenna Johnson. "The well-being of everyone who works on ‘Dancing with the Stars’ is non-negotiable," read a statement from producer BBC Studios. "Val’s social media post was inappropriate and does not reflect the values or standards expected of anyone connected with the show. As a result, he will not participate in next week’s show."

Dewan is scheduled to perform a Viennese waltz to "Unchained Melody" for "Dedication Night," dedicating her dance to her mother. Bersten, who was eliminated earlier in the season with his partner Giada de Laurentiis, will step in for Chmerkovskiy.

Chmerkovskiy addressed his suspension on Instagram Stories, apologizing to judge Carrie Ann Inaba and explaining that his intention was to defend his wife after Inaba's criticism of Johnson and Harry Shum Jr.'s performance. He admitted to making a "poor decision" by referencing a meme without considering its broader implications and stated he was "truly sorry to Carrie Ann."

Inaba had criticized Johnson and Shum Jr. for including a lift in their samba performance during "Super Bowl Night." While a source claimed Johnson was upset backstage, she told Julianne Hough that she "totally hear[d] Carrie Ann."

Chmerkovskiy's initial social media post, which has since been deleted, alluded to the 2022 Oscars incident with the phrase, "You almost saw Fresh Prince enter the ballroom last night." He later posted, "Puts some respect on her name. Shes trippin talking to her like that."

Chmerkovskiy concluded his apology by stating his intention was not to become a distraction and that he would be watching and cheering on the other contestants. He promised to "actively pause to think before I post to ensure what I am sharing aligns with who l am, and who I want to be for you all."
