Jenna Bush Hager Responds to 'Intense' Personality Label

Jenna Bush Hager has addressed the label of having an 'intense' personality, a characteristic that was brought up by her "Today with Jenna & Sheinelle" co-host, Sheinelle Jones.

The discussion, which aired on the September 16 episode, began as Bush Hager and Jones discussed Tom Cruise's new GQ Magazine cover story. When Jones noted that Cruise is perceived as intense, Bush Hager agreed that the actor is widely considered as such.

Jones then turned the conversation to Bush Hager, asking directly if she believed herself to be intense. After a moment of consideration, Bush Hager admitted, "Here's the thing, sometimes, not all, sometimes, yes, I am [intense]."

Jones elaborated on her observation, stating, "I think that even when you're not intense, you're intense in an intense way." She likened Bush Hager's approach to that of her late husband, Uche Ojeh, explaining that it translates to an enthusiastic engagement in activities, whether it's having a good time or being highly focused on professional tasks like producing a show or launching a book club.

Bush Hager expressed that she perceives the word "intense" as having a negative connotation, particularly when applied to women. While acknowledging her drive to accomplish tasks, she also mentioned a desire for more rest.

Jones encouraged Bush Hager to embrace the trait, citing Cruise as an example of someone who achieves great things through intensity. "I think you should embrace it, I think it's an awesome trait and it makes you who you are," Jones advised, adding that she does not see herself as intense.

Following the broadcast, the clip was shared on the show's official Instagram page, where viewers offered their perspectives. Many comments echoed Jones's sentiment, with some users attributing Bush Hager's intensity to her Southern upbringing and positively viewing the energy she brings to the show. "Jenna’s intense. It’s a southern thing for women. Kind of a different font than what you imagine a New York woman to be like," one commenter wrote.

Bush Hager and Jones returned to co-hosting duties on "Today" this week. Jones had been absent for the September 14 and 15 episodes to attend the Emmy Awards in Los Angeles. During her absence, Savannah Guthrie filled in, sharing an emotional moment with Bush Hager about their children while on air.
