Jenelle Evans, a former star of the MTV reality series "Teen Mom 2," posted a celebratory message on Instagram Sunday, marking her son Jace's 17th birthday. Jace, whom Evans welcomed with ex-boyfriend Andrew Lewis in August 2009, was the subject of an upbeat social media tribute from his mother. "I HAVE A 17 YEAR OLD!" Evans captioned a series of photos of her eldest child. "Being a teenager can be hard, but you seem to handle it well. You’re so smart, curious about life, and handsome. Hope today is everything you’ve wanted and more! I love you."
The birthday message comes after a tumultuous period for the family. In February, Jace was reportedly placed in a mental health facility following an incident at his grandmother Barbara Evans' home. According to TMZ, Barbara Evans called 911, alleging that Jace had brandished a firearm and made threats toward her and himself. A representative for Jenelle Evans stated at the time that Jace was "receiving the help he needs" and that Evans was committed to his treatment.
In April, Evans spoke on the podcast "La Femme Talk," describing Jace as being in a "safe" place with a "holistic approach" and that he was "very happy" and "very focused on himself." She indicated that she had been refraining from public discussion to prioritize his healing, stating, "if I'm quiet, I'm up to something."
Earlier in July, Evans shared another update on Instagram, writing that her son was "working on himself and focusing on his emotions." She acknowledged that he had experienced "ups and downs" but expressed hope for his future. Evans noted that she had spent "countless nights of crying over the past six months" and was determined to help him both mentally and physically.
Last year, Evans admitted to difficulties in her parenting of Jace, particularly after he publicly shared private text messages. At the time, she stated, "My children are my whole world. And everything I do is to try to protect, guide and love them. Like any parent, I set rules and boundaries... and sometimes that isn't easy."
Evans gained recognition in 2010 on the MTV show "16 and Pregnant" during her pregnancy with Jace. She later joined the "Teen Mom" cast the following year. In addition to Jace, Evans is also mother to Kaiser Orion Griffith, 12, with ex-boyfriend Nathan Griffith, and daughter Ensley Jolie Eason, nine, with ex-husband David Eason.
