Jen Hatmaker's Husband's Affair and Hidden Life Revealed

Jen Hatmaker, a prominent author and speaker known for her work on faith and culture, revealed that her husband of 27 years, Brandon Hatmaker, confessed to a nearly two-year affair.

The revelation came after Hatmaker awoke at 2:30 a.m. one July night to find her husband drunkenly voice-texting another woman with the words, "I just can't quit you."

Brandon Hatmaker, who was a respected pastor, admitted to the affair three days after the text message, telling his wife that he had lied to her daily for nearly two years and "couldn’t even remember what was not true." He further stated that he "couldn't quit" the other woman.

Jen Hatmaker, who grew up in a conservative Southern Baptist Church, noted that divorce was viewed as a significant aberration. In response to the publication of Jen's book detailing the experience, Brandon Hatmaker wrote on social media that "people in a healthy marriage don’t just wake up one day and decide to have an affair."

When Jen Hatmaker’s husband finally came clean about the affair three days after the phone message, he told her that he had lied to her every day for nearly two years and ‘couldn’t even remember what was not true’

Jen described the discovery as a moment of profound shock, stating, "I was shocked to realise how asleep at the wheel I'd been." She detailed how her husband's secret life and infidelity deeply impacted her, leading to a re-evaluation of their marriage and her own understanding of their relationship. She also reflected on how societal norms around women and responsibility influenced her upbringing and relationship dynamics.

At summer camp, girls like Jen were taught that revealing clothes made them responsible for boys ‘deviance’, while beneath the veneer of patriarchal respectability, dark secrets lurked: the science teacher at Jen’s school, for instance, was grooming and abusing 13-year-old girls

Jen contrasted their outwardly opposite lives, noting her husband's upbringing as an only child, vegetarianism, and lack of prior marriage or children, which stood in stark contrast to her own background. However, she described their relationship as fitting together "like a puzzle piece."

‘I’m a white girl and come from a big family, and he’s this giant, tall black man and an only child. He’s never married or had kids. He’s vegetarian, for god’s sake – my dad was a cattle rancher. We are so opposite on paper, but our relationship is like a puzzle piece, it fits,’ says Jen

The revelations emerged in the context of Hatmaker's new book, which delves into the complexities of her marriage and personal life.
