Jelly Roll, a three-time Grammy winner, defended a joke he made about President Donald Trump's weight during his recent guest hosting stint on "Jimmy Kimmel Live!," stating that U.S. presidents should possess thicker skin.
During his monologue on Monday's episode, the artist, whose real name is Jason Bradley DeFord, referred to Trump as a "fat pig." The remark drew criticism online, with some suggesting he was insulting his audience. In response on Tuesday, Jelly Roll, 41, expressed surprise at the backlash.
"Any U.S. president should be able to handle a few jokes, right?" Jelly Roll stated. "They should also be able to handle gas prices, healthcare and the occasional international conflict, but beggars can't be choosers."
Jelly Roll's monologue included observations about Trump's attendance at the IndyCar Freedom 250 event in Washington, D.C. He joked that the president "seemed to enjoy the IndyCar race, which was a real switch-up for him because normally he only likes his own race." He also quipped about Trump's motorcade, calling it "the lap of honor - which sounds like a loyalty program at a strip club."
The artist then transitioned to comments about Trump's physique. "Well, Mr. President, from one fat pig to another, take it from me that physical fitness is very important," Jelly Roll said. He added, "In the last few years, I’ve lost 300 pounds. That means I’ve lost an entire Donald Trump - and let’s be honest, based on his approval ratings, it seems like most of the country wants to do the same thing."
Jelly Roll acknowledged facing pushback for not treating the president with "reverence and dignity." He countered by saying, "I want to remind y’all that I go by the name Jelly Roll - I don't even treat myself with reverence and dignity!"
He suggested that some viewers were surprised he had opinions at all, given his appearance. "They see a guy that looks like me and assume the only opinion I have is whether I prefer my meth crystal or classic!" he remarked.
Jelly Roll also commented on the political nature of such jokes, noting that if listeners desired jokes about Kamala Harris, they should have voted for her. He addressed those who threatened to boycott his music by stating, "go right ahead - cause I'm gonna keep speaking my truth, or my name isn't Post Malone!"
