Jeffries Rebukes Democrat Golden for Endorsing Republican Lawler

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries has strongly condemned a fellow Democrat, Rep. Jared Golden, for endorsing Republican Rep. Mike Lawler, labeling Lawler a "partisan hack and Trump sycophant." The criticism comes as Golden, a retiring Democrat from Maine, crossed party lines to support Lawler, a Republican representing a New York district, in his upcoming re-election bid.

Jeffries, in a statement to Fox News Digital, dismissed Golden's endorsement as a "smoke-and-mirrors ploy" that would not influence the outcome of the race in New York's Hudson Valley. He asserted that Lawler has "never shown bipartisan courage when it matters" and characterized Lawler's opponent as a "combat veteran and patriot."

Golden, however, defended his endorsement, citing Lawler's bipartisan credentials and the need for lawmakers to work with those who hold differing views. In an opinion piece, Golden described Lawler as one of the most bipartisan members of Congress and argued that representing districts like theirs requires finding common ground. Golden noted that Lawler's district, which he noted was carried by Kamala Harris in 2024, forces him to "work for people who disagree with you," emphasizing that these individuals are neighbors, not enemies.

Lawler expressed his gratitude for Golden's endorsement, acknowledging their shared belief in prioritizing constituents' needs over party affiliation. "We share a firm belief that what’s best for the people should come before one’s party, and that if more members on both sides of the aisle took that approach more often, the country would be better off for it," Lawler stated on X.

This is not the first time Golden has broken with House Democratic leadership. He recently defied Jeffries by voting with Republicans on a procedural "rule vote," a move that Jeffries had previously described as a "breach of trust." Golden has also publicly supported former President Donald Trump's tariff policies, further distinguishing himself from his party.

Lawler faces a challenging re-election campaign in his New York district, which is considered a swing district. Despite the odds, Lawler has previously won in a district that voted for President Biden, demonstrating an ability to appeal to a broader range of voters.
