Jeffrey Archer, Bestselling Author and Former Politician, Dies at 86

Bestselling author and former politician Jeffrey Archer died suddenly and peacefully at his home on October 5, 2026, at the age of 86. His publishers, Harper Collins, announced his passing.

Archer, whose novels have sold over 300 million copies worldwide, died just one day before the scheduled release of his latest book, "Adam And Eve." He passed away "between writing sessions," according to his publisher.

Born in London, Archer served as the Member of Parliament for Louth from 1969 to 1974. Following his time in the House of Commons, he was made a life peer and entered the House of Lords in 1992. He also held the position of deputy chairman of the Conservative Party in 1985 during Margaret Thatcher's premiership and later announced his candidacy for Mayor of London in 1999.

After losing his parliamentary seat in the 1970s, Archer turned to writing, achieving international acclaim with his 1979 novel "Kane And Abel," which has sold over 30 million copies. His prolific writing career spanned decades, producing numerous best-selling novels.

Archer spoke with the Daily Mail last month about his career and health. He revealed in 2013 that he had undergone surgery to remove his prostate following a cancer diagnosis, which rendered him permanently impotent. He had also spoken of experiencing hip problems and a general weariness with old age.

"I don't think I'd like to live to 100," he said in September, noting his desire to remain mentally sharp, with Alzheimer's being his greatest fear. He described his writing process as entirely longhand, stating, "I don't know how to turn on a computer."

He is survived by his wife, Dame Mary, an eminent scientist, their sons William and James, and five grandchildren.
