Jeff Probst Not Ready to Retire from 'Survivor'
The long-time host expressed confidence in the show's format and storytelling ahead of its 51st season.
Jeff Probst, the host and executive producer of "Survivor," has indicated he has no immediate plans to retire from the long-running reality competition series. Ahead of the premiere of Season 51, Probst stated in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter that he believes the show's format remains strong and that he is proud of its narrative capabilities.
"I don’t see an end in sight right now. I think the format is one of the greatest formats in TV," Probst said. "I think we’re a good team producing it. I think we’re really good storytellers. I’m really proud of our storytelling. I think it’s one of the hallmarks of ‘Survivor’ is we’re not like any other show."
Probst, 64, has hosted "Survivor" since its debut on CBS in 2000. He highlighted the show's "deep, rich storytelling where you take conflict and you create suspense and you have tension, and then you resolve it and then you do it again." This, he believes, is what allows the series to "go for a while."
While optimistic about the show's continued success, Probst acknowledged that he may not be hosting for another 50 seasons. He humorously suggested a scenario where he might need assistance, "If I had a guy behind me, say I’m in a bit of a walker or wheelchair, but I got a great AC. I got an assistant chair guy and he’s just wheeling me through."
In a separate interview with The Wrap in June, Probst discussed the possibility of a successor. He mentioned that there is "a small list" of individuals who could potentially take over his role, noting that some players possess the necessary storytelling instincts and understanding of people to host the show. However, he also emphasized that the hosting job is demanding and requires a specific skillset.
Probst also shared a life lesson learned from filming the new season: "You cannot play to not lose in life. You just can’t. You’re doomed. You have to play to win. It may fail. Your business idea, it may lose all your money, but you can’t create a business hoping to not lose money. It just doesn’t work. That’s how I’m trying to see my own life."
