Jeff Brazier Vows to 'Never Stop Trying' to Save Son Freddy Amid Addiction Battle
TV personality Jeff Brazier opens up about his son Freddy's struggles with cannabis addiction and mental health issues, as well as his complicated relationship with Freddy's grandmother.
Jeff Brazier has publicly addressed his son Freddy's ongoing battle with addiction and severe mental health challenges, stating his unwavering commitment to supporting him. Freddy, 22, the son of the late Jade Goody, has been struggling with a cannabis addiction and associated mental health issues, including psychosis. At 17, Freddy was sectioned and later spent his 18th birthday in a psychiatric ward, also undergoing a stint in rehabilitation.
Brazier shared his feelings of helplessness during his son's struggles on Matt Willis's podcast "On The Mend," admitting he "couldn't do anything to stop it." He recounted searching for Freddy during psychotic episodes and expressed his determination to continue supporting his son, emphasizing, "I'm never going to stop." He believes this is what Jade Goody would have wanted. Despite Freddy's prior interventions, Brazier noted that "that still wasn't enough for that behaviour to change."
Difficult Family Dynamics
The conversation also touched upon Freddy's challenging relationship with his maternal grandmother, Jackiey Budden. Brazier had previously attempted legal measures to distance Freddy from Budden, whom he considered a negative influence. These concerns arose after reports of Freddy and Budden smoking cannabis together, with Freddy claiming his grandmother played a role in his addiction. Brazier described their relationship as "very tricky," highlighting the difficulty of protecting a child from a relative, especially a surviving blood relative of a lost loved one.
Freddy himself has spoken about the mental toll of his relationship with his grandmother, stating that while he loves her, their time together has been "tough." He believes his mental health issues are partly influenced by her, though he also accepts personal accountability for his actions. "No one's to blame other than myself. I feel like I was always going to be troubled and be the brother that goes down the wrong path," Freddy said on "The Terry Stone Connection" podcast.
Freddy acknowledged similarities with his grandmother in their thought processes, particularly concerning overthinking and negative thinking patterns. He also finds it difficult when Budden compares him to his mother, Jade. "When she says, 'oh Freddy is Jade with a penis'. I don't know whether to be hurt about it or to laugh," he stated.
History of Addiction and Family Conflict
Freddy lost his mother, Jade Goody, at the age of four to cervical cancer. Since her death, Brazier has raised Freddy and his older brother Bobby, with Budden's involvement, though their relationship has seen periods of conflict. Brazier's attempt to legally intervene to protect Freddy from Budden stemmed from concerns over their shared cannabis use. Freddy sided with his grandmother, and Brazier eventually withdrew the legal action. In June 2025, Freddy and Budden were reportedly seen smoking what appeared to be cannabis in public. Budden defended their actions, saying, "As long as Freddy smokes with me he's safe. At least I know what he's smoking as it's nasty out there."
Freddy recalled starting to smoke cannabis at age 12, admitting that while it wasn't his first drug experience, his grandmother was instrumental in getting him "hooked" on marijuana. He detailed his journey, which has included rehab, being sectioned, and experiencing manic episodes.
