U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro has drawn sharp criticism on social media following the felony indictment of former Olympian David Hearn, who is accused of vandalizing the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool.
Pirro's office announced the charges, alleging a "violent effort" to remove the pool's sealant. At a press conference, Pirro stated Hearn caused over $1,000 in damage, attributing it to his "bare hands." When questioned about proof of damage, Pirro responded, "With an expert. Come to the trial."
However, Hearn contends he was merely touching an already detached piece of the pool's lining. A statement released by the Democracy Defenders Fund, representing Hearn, called the charges "outrageous" and an attempt by the Trump administration to "shift blame for their own failures."
Critics have drawn parallels to a previous case involving Sean Charles Dunn, who was acquitted of charges brought by Pirro's office. Additionally, some have questioned the administration's assertiveness in prosecuting Hearn while former President Donald Trump pardoned individuals involved in the January 6, 2021 Capitol insurrection.
The new Reflecting Pool coating had begun to peel shortly after its installation, according to Associated Press reporting.
